IN LOVING MEMORY OF WALTER ROYNS
Walter Royns, affectionately known as "Uncle Walter" and "Rome" to his family and friends, was born on November 9, 1947. He was the seventh child of the late William Royns, Sr. and Rebecca Boone Royns.
Educated in the Alabama Public School System, Walter graduated from Brighton High School before joining the U.S. Air Force and touring Thailand. After his service, Walter dedicated many years working at Hayes Aircraft.
On August 18, 2024, Pastor Bobby Law and Co-Pastor Darlene Law had the profound privilege of leading Walter to Christ through the Prayer of Faith. This significant moment marked a transformation in Walter's life, fulfilling the promise of God as stated in James 5:15 (KJV): "And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he has committed sins, they shall be forgiven him." Walter's acceptance of faith brought him peace and hope, reflecting his unwavering spirit and the love he shared with those around him.
A LIFE FULL OF PASSIONS AND A SCHOLAR
Walter had a few interests that kept him busy and engaged. He loved reading books and had a special bond with his late nephew, Naylan "Bubba" Harris, with whom he enjoyed detailing cars. Family was central to Walter's life, and he enjoyed spending time with them above all else.
A PROTECTOR, PROVIDER, A GENTLEMAN
Walter was known for being a protector of his family. Uncle Walter believed in providing and pulling his own weight. A true "manly man," he always insisted on opening doors and letting women go first and he insisted on pumping the gas. His sense of cleanliness and order persisted even during his cognitive decline, as he continued to make his bed in military style, vacuum, wash dishes, and even demanded to help cut the grass, which he saw as "men's work."
Walter had a mannerly disposition that stood out. He never failed to say, "thank you," and when out in public, he would put on his "proper hat," extending his hand for a handshake and introducing himself by saying, "I'm Walter Royns." His love for children was evident, and he was known for his encouraging words, always seeing the best in people and inspiring them to achieve greatness, often reminding them to "Get the Money!"
A MAN OF WIT AND MUSIC
Quick with his witty comments and jokes, Uncle Walter could catch you off guard and have you laughing until you were out of breath. He enjoyed taking car rides around the city with his niece and had a deep appreciation for good music and singing, even though he would never sing for the family. His presence was always filled with fun and joy, ensuring there was never a dull moment.
A LEGACY OF LOVE
Walter was preceded in death by six siblings: Ella Lee Askew, Woodrow "Buddy" Harris, Eddie "Suga-Man" Harris, Sr., Cornelius "Shorty-Cook" Harris, Sr., Mary "Snora" Walton, William "Fella" Boone and William "Junior" Royns, Jr. Uncle Walter transitioned from this life on August 26, 2024, at home surrounded by family. He leaves behind cherished memories with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.
Walter Royns lived a life full of love, laughter, and loyalty. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew him. His commitment to family, his gentlemanly ways, and his encouraging spirit will be missed.
