Walter Ree Burrell, Sr. (Affectionately known as Ree) was born to the late Reverend and Mrs. Harvest (Louisiana Jones) Burrell in Catherine, Alabama (Wilcox County). He was the third of ten children. Walter was educated in the Wilcox County School System. He was employed by VJ Elmore and later retired as a trucker driver from the Piggly Wiggly Warehouse. He also served as the Vice President of the Hillman Park Neighborhood Watch Committee and a member of the Mary Dorsey Center Board.
He confessed hope in Christ at an early age and joined Bethel A.M.E. Church. After Walter relocated to Birmingham, he joined the Bryant Chapel A.M.E. Church under the leadership of the late Reverend J. T. Jamar, where he continued to serve as a faithful member. He played an active role in his community and church serving as the Treasurer of his Sunday School Class, Vice President and President of the Usher Board #1, Male Chorus, Steward and Trustees Board. He enjoyed watching Atlanta Braves baseball, fishing and hunting.
In July of 2010, Walter married Shirley Graham. They enjoyed traveling, going to sporting events, and most importantly spending time with their family.
He was preceded in the death by father, Rev. Harvest Burrell, mother Mrs. Louisiana Jones Burrell, son David Burrell, two sisters Thelma Burrell and Ora Dean Burrell Gray, brother William T. Burrell and great granddaughter Shaqueria Greene.
Walter is survived by his wife Dr. Shirley Graham Burrell, three daughters Audrey D. Burrell, Birmingham, AL, Daphne Blakley, Pinson, AL Dana (Alexander) Lamar, Madison, AL, three sons Walter R. Burrell, Jr., Bessemer, AL, Michael D. Burrell, Birmingham, AL, and David Graham III, Atlanta, GA, three sisters Margie Carson, Birmingham, AL, Genneater Austin, Valley Stream, NY, Geraldine (Elvin) Coleman, Birmingham, AL; three brothers John Davis (Myrna) Burrell, Jamaica, NY, Harvest (Edna) Burrell, Brooklyn, NY and Robert James Burrell, Birmingham, AL, twelve grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and one great great grandchild; his former wife, Aldorthia Moore Burrell, the mother of his children, and a host of nieces, nephew, relatives and friends.
