Ruth Hooks

Ruth Esther Hooks was born September 5, 1936, to the late Will Lewis and Mary Louise Cannon in Birmingham, Alabama.
She was baptized at an early age at Miller Presbyterian Church. She later joined St. Joseph Baptist Church where she was a dedicated member for over 50 years working in many ministries. Some of her many contributions were as a youth Sunday school teacher, Youth Dept. leader, and instrumental in the establishment of the day care program where she served as the Director for many years. In 2006 she was presented with the Pastoral Support award by Dr. Abraham L. Woods, Jr. in recognition of pastoral support 1967-2006.
She received her education in the Birmingham City Schools and graduated from A. H. Parker High School in 1954. She received a full scholarship and attended Stillman College after graduation.
She was joined in holy matrimony to Lonzell Hooks on July 28, 1955. She was blessed with 5 children: Sharon, LaShon, Lonzell Jr, Tara and Kedric.
She was the matriarch of her family, loved and appreciated for her strength and her devotion to the word of God. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother that could always be counted on to be there when needed. She rooted her family in the Lord in many ways including ensuring that her children and grands had their own Bible, went to church and Sunday school with her, and participated in all programs and activities.
Her deep love for children led to a long and successful career in childcare, helping to nurture and teach them to love God and be great citizens. Her students now include some of our community’s most influential leaders.
On Wednesday, November 16, 2022, Ruth left us for her heavenly home and a new life with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She will forever be missed in the lives of those she loved and those who hold her dear within their hearts.
She is preceded in death by her parents, sister Mary, brother Alvin, husband Lonzell Sr., daughter Sharon, 2 sons Lonzell Jr. and Kedric, grandson Eric Jamari, and beloved daughter-in-law Natalie.
She leaves to mourn: Two daughters, LaShon Kimball and Tara Herd, a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, in-laws and a host of other family and friends.
