Ronald Wayne Williams was born August 18, 1957, to Joe Lee Williams and Jessie Mae Williams. Ronald (everyone who knew him called him Wayne and for those closest to him the affectionate nickname was "Dawg") grew up in Bessemer, Alabama. He was the youngest of eight siblings born to the union of Joe and Jessie Mae. His parents along with five of his siblings: Earl, Mary, Sarah, Leroy and Vincent preceded him in transitioning from this life into the kingdom of Heaven.
He was christened at an early age at Allen Temple A.M.E. Church. He later joined New Bethel Baptist Church in Pratt City under the leadership of Pastor T.L. Lewis. He then moved his membership to Sixth Avenue Beulah Baptist Church joining his sister, Mary Tartt under the leadership of Pastor Aaron Johnson. He continued to build upon his spiritual foundation throughout his life.
During his youth, Wayne excelled at sports. He attended McNeil Grade School where he started to develop his basketball skills and love for the sport. He went on to attend Hueytown High School and continued to thrive playing basketball. After graduating high school, Wayne attended Tennessee State University and played football during his time there. Later he transferred to Lincoln University in Missouri and played basketball for the Lincoln University team.
Thereafter, Ronald (Wayne) joined the U.S. Army in 1979 and received a Certificate of Achievement in the 108th Air Defense Artillery Group. After serving two years in the military, he moved to Detroit, Michigan and began employment at Awrey Bakery. He went on to work at Howard Ternes Packaging Plant and other manufacturing jobs while in Detroit.
As his health began to fail due to diabetes, he returned to Alabama. He continued to work various jobs and spent a brief time in Decatur, Alabama. As his illnesses progressed, his nephew, Michael Tartt moved him into his home where he lived until his passing.
The most unique things about Wayne were his easy-going demeanor, his affectionate nature with children and his overall gift to protect those that he loved. His laugh was big and infectious. He was a gentle giant to so many nieces and nephews covering generations. As his time here has come to pass, he will certainly be missed by those of us remaining to carry the torch.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his oldest brother, Joe Lee Williams, Jr. (Everett-deceased); sister, Janice Williams; special nephew, Michael Tartt; God-sister, Willie Ruth Hill; best friend, Cedric Bankhead; a host of nieces, great nieces, nephews, great nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
