HER BIRTH
Former Senator Priscilla Ann Proffitt Dunn was born on October 8, 1943, in Margaret, Alabama, to the devoted parents, Johnnie A. Proffitt and Mary Ella Walker.
HER FAITH
From an early age, Former Senator Dunn confessed her love for Christ. She was a womanof unwavering faith, living out her beliefs daily. At Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Church (SGMBC) she served in numerous roles: Trustee, Sunday School Teacher, BTU Children's Instructor, General Chair for the Pastor's Concern Ministry, SGMBC Scholarship Chair, Program Chair for the SGMBC Annual Education Program, and as a Member of the SGMBC Finance Ministry. She also served as an instructor for the Jefferson County Congress of Christian Education.
HER EDUCATION
Former Senator Dunn attended J.S. Abrams High School, where she was Captain of the Cheerleading Squad and the first-ever Miss Abrams High. A stellar student, she graduated with honors in the Class of 1961. She went on to earn a bachelor's degree in education from Alabama State University and a master's degree in education from the University of Montevallo.
HER ESTEEMED CAREER
Former Senator Dunn began her professional journey with a passion for teaching, dedicating 30 years to the Alabama public school system. Her deep sense of justice and commitment to serving the community led her into politics, where she continued to exemplify her dedication to public service. She spent 24 years in the Alabama Legislature, serving in the House of Representatives from 1998 to 2009 and in the Alabama Senate from 2009 to 2022.
HER TIRELESS SERVICE
Former Senator Dunn's community service extended far beyond her political career. She served on several boards and committees, including President of the Concerned Citizens of Bessemer Cut-Off for 16 years, Coordinator for the Jefferson County Democratic Conference, the Board of Directors for the Bessemer Civic Center, President of the Humanistic Challengers Federated Club, Secretary of Girls, Inc. of Central Alabama, and Member of the Jefferson/Shelby Counties American Cancer Society Advisory Board. She also held a seat on the State Democratic Executive Committee, among numerous other roles.
HER CHERISHED LEGACY
A life of service, love, and accomplishment, Former Senator Dunn leaves behind a profound legacy. She is survived by her beloved husband, the Honorable Grover Dunn, her daughter, the Honorable Karen Dunn Burks (the late Eric Burks), her two cherished grandsons, Grover Blake Burks and Frederic Brock Burks, her brother, the late Herman L. Lumzy, her nephews, Herman Lumzy (Jasmine) and Mario Lumzy (Rhonda), her niece, Tameeka Lumzy Todd (Jeremiah), and a host of relatives and dear friends.
HER HEAVENLY TRANSITION
On September 17, 2024, God called His faithful servant, Former Senator Priscilla A. Proffitt Dunn, to her eternal home. Though her passing brings sorrow to her loved ones, it marks a celebration in heaven, for to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.
