The Obituary Psalm 63: 1, 8 “O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is; My soul followeth hard after thee: thy right hand upholdeth me.”
Percy Milton Lamar, Jr. was born May 27, 1932 to the late Percy Milton Lamar, Sr. and Rilla Caldwell Lamar in Autauga County, Alabama. Percy was saved in his early childhood and was often referred to as “Preacher.” His many gifts and talents became evident as he grew in grace and in the statue of God. His desire to please God led him to become a scholar of the word of God as he studied to rightly divide God’s word. He also used his voice to sing melodies and praises to God. Some of his favorite songs were Hard Fighting Soldier, I Won’t Have To Cry No More and Love Lifted me just to name a few. Percy had a gloriously rewarding military career. While he was enlisted he earned several titles such as sharp shooter, weapons specialist, dog trainer and a paratrooper. His unit was the 187 th Airborne Rakksans. Percy’s love for the military inspired many to become great soldiers for our country.
Upon his return home, Percy trained in civilian life to become a skilled machinist and proved himself to be a proficient one. Using the knowledge and his skills to operate heavy machinery at SMI Steel formerly known as Conner Steel of Birmingham; after many years at the company he was afforded retirement. God favored Percy and he was ordained as Deacon Lamar on March 6, 1977 to serve at his beloved Bethel Baptist Church under Pastor E.L. Nevett, Sr. Aside from being a Deacon he served the church in several capacities being a member of the Number Two Choir, Male Chorus, Wednesday Bible Study Class and a Sunday School Teacher for Class Number Nine.
Deacon Lamar is survived by: wife, Gloria Lamar; children, Sabrina (Terry) Wicker, Sanford, NC, Floyd (Elise) Lamar, Bessemer, AL, Debra (Min. Marvin) Lee, Sanford, NC, Marcella (Gilbert) Johnson, Fayetteville, NC and Louis Lama, Mililani, HI; eleven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, Bethel Church Family and friends.
