Mary Joyce Collins, born on July 7, 1958, in Birmingham, Alabama, was the beloved daughter of Mary Elizabeth Nolan Collins and Oliver Collins. As the youngest of eight children, she was cherished by her family. She was raised in the West End Powderly Hills community and was a proud graduate of Jones Valley High School. Mary furthered her education by earning an associate's degree from Lawson State Community College.
Mary's career began with the Jefferson County Commissioner's Office, followed by her dedicated service at the City of Birmingham, where she worked in the City Councilor's Office and the Mayor's Division until her retirement.
Throughout her life, Mary was deeply loved and adored by her son Anderious J. Collins, her daughter, Nicole J. Collins, and her grandson, Nicolas J. Collins (Nicole Collins son). She also shared a special bond with her brother, Gregory Collins Sr. (and wife Janice Collins), and her sisters, Betty Robinson and Betty Jones (and husband Larry Jones) and a host of aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews. Her family extended beyond relatives to include friends, church members, coworkers and anyone she encountered, all of whom were touched by her warm spirit and infectious greeting, often accompanied by her friendly smile and "Hey, How are you doing?"
Mary J. Collins's, heart and spirit were powered by her unwavering Faith, Love, Prayer, and her knowledge that God was always in control. She never hesitated to help anyone, by always following her heart. This selflessness was one of her greatest gifts. Aside from her passion for writing, she had an extraordinary ability to be a beacon of light, comforting and guiding her family, friends, and everyone she encountered. She had a way of calming the storms of life, making sense of situations when they seemed uncertain.
Our beloved mother and grandmother was a naturally kind, compassionate woman of Faith, who led by example for us. She taught us invaluable lessons on how to navigate life, and for that Mom, we will forever love and cherish you. Although you are no longer with us in physical form, we pray that your legacy continues to thrive and touch the lives of others, just as you have touched ours.
