Martha Shields

Born February 1, 1921 to Harriet and Peter Witherspoon, Martha was the fourth of ten children. Her birth name was Marti', but she did not like it so she decided to change it to a more "common name" as she put it, thereby giving life to Martha. She met and married Jake Shields, Sr. They were life partners for 54 years until his death in October 1991. From this union Jake Shields, Jr. was born. Jake Shields, Jr. passed away in February 1971. Four children survived him. She confessed Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord and attended Bethel Baptist Church under the leadership of three pastors. She was a faithful member of the #1 Usher Board until her health failed. Martha departed this life on November 4, 2009 at UAB West Hospital. Martha leaves to cherish her memories four grandchildren Deneen Shields, Gwendolyn (Cedric) Walker, Monica Shields, and Jake Shields III. a special niece who was more like a daughter- Sarah Glass, seven great-grandchildren- Monique Shanarika, Cedric Jr., Cedreka, Quinton, Jake VI and Jacob, seven great-great grandchildren, one great-great-great grandchild-Trinity Jeaneen, three brothers- Randolph (Betty) Witherspoon, Adolph (Bessie) Witherspoon, and Jimmie (Norwasie) Witherspoon, one sister- Annie Johnson and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
