Maggie M. Calvert was born on February 11, 1935 to the late Willie Holley, Sr and Nancy Nelson Holley in Bessemer, Alabama.
She confessed her faith in Christ at an early age and served on the Nurses’ Guild and Deaconess Ministry at Shiloh Baptist Church, Brighton, AL, and later joined the New Jerusalem Baptist Church under the pastorate of her son, Reverend Dr. Reginald W. Calvert. At New Jerusalem, she was active in the Pastoral Relations Ministry, the Deaconess Ministry, Bible Study Ministry, and Women’s Ministry.
Maggie was united in holy matrimony to Deacon James (Sol) Howard Calvert and to this union six children were born.
She attended UAB School of Nursing and received her certification as a Licensed Practical Nurse in 1968. She was employed as a nurse at University Hospital and retired after twenty-five years of service. She also worked at Fairview Nursing Home for twelve years. She was known for her compassionate and nurturing spirit.
Maggie loved shopping, cooking and family gatherings. She was well known for her sweet potato pies and banana pudding. She made sure you never left her house hungry.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Sol, three children-- Gregory Alphonso, Lisa Reneé, and Willie Earl—and two brothers, John Holley and Willie Holley, Jr.
Maggie leaves to cherish her memory three loving children: Jerome (Esther Bea), Wendy, and Reginald (Karla); ten grandchildren; one sister, Susie Mae Hill; one brother, Phillip Holley; one niece, Lizzerene Johnson, and a host of great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
