Helen Delores Boyd was born to Mary and Dock Boyd on May 23, 1947, in the Muscoda community where she was raised. As a graduate of Wenonah High School (1965) and Alabama A&MUniversity (1969), she began a career in childhood education with the Homewood Board of Education. Most of her 31-year tenure in Homewood involved teaching middle school English.
Not long after college graduation, Helen met Ebb Clarence Hinton, and they later married on December 23, 1972. They had two daughters. When Ebb passed away in 2012, they were together more than 40 years. The couple found joy in their social clubs, annual New Orleans trips, family reunions, Christmas galas, and so forth. Friends and family hosted a surprise party celebrating their 30th anniversary which brought them much delight.
Upon retirement in 2001, Helen began substitute teaching at Hueytown schools where she also mentored young educators. Having lived In Hueytown for almost 50 years, she devoted time to the Concerned Citizens of Hueytown charitable organization whose purpose is encouraging the community youth. She was a frequent winner at bingo and often could be found completing a word search puzzle or watching Lifetime movies.
After joining Starlight Missionary Baptist Church and accepting Jesus Christ very early in life, she was a dedicated and active member until moving away in 2020. Her roles included Sunday school teacher, Vacation Bible School director, and chair of special programs. Additionally, she represented Starlight as a long-time member of the Jefferson County District Missionary Baptist Association where she held the title of Matrons counselor. In November 2024, Helen was honored when the church's Fellowship Hall was named after her.
Predeceased family includes parents, sister, Betty Ware and brother, Dock Boyd, Jr.
Cherishing her precious memories are her son, Maurice (Willette) Boyd; daughters, Danielle (Sean) Hassel and Kristen (Christopher, Sr.) Willis; granddaughters, Kendall, Harper and Ella; grandson, Christopher, Jr.; uncle, Donnie (Denise) Freeman; niece/sister, LaShawn (Richard) Stevenson; in-laws, Gladys Sims, Tommye Hinton Roberts, Henry Hinton, Jr. and Patrick (Charlotte) Hinton. Helen was loved dearly by numerous family and friends.
