Floyda Walton

Floyda Mae Walton, age 93, a lifelong resident of Bessemer, AL., died July 13, 2011 at South Haven Nursing Home. "Flo" was born to the late Grover and Florence Sanders Walton, December 13, 1917. She received her B.A. from Alabama State Teachers College and earned a Masters degree in education from Boston University in Massachusetts. She joined the Bessemer School System in 1946 and taught at a number of its schools for more than 40 years. Floyda Walton was among the first to integrate Bessemer's public schools and maintained close ties to many of her students long after they graduated and made their way in the world. She was preceded in death by her brother Eugene Walton and sister Evelyn Walton Dancy. Her family includes her sister Mamie Jo Walton of Bessemer, her brother Grover Walton Jr. of Orlando, Florida, nieces Ethel Walton, Deborah Dancy, Kathy Dancy, and Benita Walton, nephews Anthony Walton, Grover Walton III, and Bernard Kynes, and many great nieces and nephews. Public Visitation will take place at Chambers Funeral Home 2527 Ninth Avenue North, Bessemer, from 1-6PM. Family Hour will be from 6:00-7:00PM. Funeral services will be held at First Avenue Ninth Street Baptist Church, Bessemer, Thursday July 21st at 1:00PM.
