Dorothy Lee Gaines (Dot) was born on June 14, 1951 to the late Annie Kate & Johnnie B. Gaines Sr. in Bessemer, AL. Dorothy was educated in the Bessemer City School System and was a proud graduate of Abrams High School, Class of 1969.
Dorothy accepted Christ at an early age and joined Sixth Avenue Beulah Baptist Church in Bessemer, Alabama. She was in the Number 3 Choir as a child. Later, she joined the Number 1 Usher Board in her adult life and has been a member for several years.
Dorothy was a very caring, loving and compassionate person. She always had a warm personality with a genuine smile, never meeting a stranger. Dorothy absolutely loved spending time with her grandkids. She took full advantage of her life. She also enjoyed watching “The Young and the Restless” and trying her luck at casinos and arcades. Dorothy had a passion for doing hair. She had an auntie that would travel from York, AL for her to do her hair on a regular basis.
Dorothy was an overcomer of cancer. One of the many medical challenges she conquered. Through all other obstacles she continued to keep God first and remained positive for the strength of her kids. Dorothy loved her kids tremendously and they loved her to the end.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her daughter-in-law Mrs. Kimberly Lucille Hicks-Gaines.
Dorothy leaves precious memories of her life to: her children Valerie (Arthur) Willis, Diontress Gaines and Ashley Gaines; six grandchildren, Kierra Hicks, Arterrius Willis, Treyvon Willis, Deaundra Coleman, Kameron Gaines and Madyson Alexander; three great-grandchildren, JaBari & Jace Boles and Kameron Reynolds; one foster grandson, Cameron Brand; one brother Johnny B. Gaines Jr. of Detroit, MI; one sister Mary J. Gaines of Fairfield, AL; two God sisters, Juanita Willis and Lucille Walker; a long time special friend Henry Ramsey; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
