Sister Deloris Spidle Holmes, affectionately known as Doll, was the first of eight children born to the union, of the late Mr. Campha and the late Mrs. Classie Bell Moore Spidle on July 28, 1943 in McDowell, AL. Her parents re-located to Marengo County and then to Jefferson County in 1949. She confessed hope in Christ at an early age and united with Mars Hill Baptist Church in Brighton AL under the leadership of the late Rev. Charles Manzie. She was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Mr. Louis Holmes Jr. on August 20, 1965. To this union one son was born.
She was a member of Mars Hill Baptist Church for most of her life and worked tirelessly for many years as the church secretary under the leadership of the late Rev. Frank Scott. As a child she sang in the youth choir, worked with the junior usher board, and the BTU. As an adult, she worked with the Progressive Matrons where she served as the President. Sis. Holmes was also a member of the kitchen committee. For the last seven years she attended Sixth Avenue Beulah Baptist Church where the Rev. Aaron Johnson is Pastor. Deloris attended Brighton Elementary, Brighton High School and graduated in 1961. She also attended Miles College. She then went to work for Banks, Moon, and Associates. Later she took some classes at Bessemer State Technical College. Deloris worked for a number of years at Brighton High School. She worked for South Central Bell and retired after 25 years of service. Desiring to continue in the work force, Deloris worked at W. Clyde Williams Terrace Apartments for almost 18 years. Deloris also had one Sister who preceded her in death at the age of three months, Glenda Elaine Spidle. Sister Holmes departed this life on April 7, 2020 at UAB Hospital in Birmingham AL. She leaves to cherish her memories:her only child whom she loved dearly, Kelvin O. Holmes (Mary Alice) Birmingham, AL; grandchild, Kelvin Quar’Shard Holmes, Birmingham AL; brothers, Setrett Spidle Sr. (Sharon), Houston, TX and Wayne Spidle (Lillie V), Covington, GA; sisters, Joyce Marie S. Thomas, Hueytown, AL, Bernice S. Thomas (Harold), Brighton, AL, Lanette S. George (Homer Sam), Bessemer, AL, and Sandra S. Moore, Brighton AL; aunts, Mrs. Olivia Bizzell, Bessemer, AL, Mrs. Bettie Green, Mrs. Barbara Jones (Charlie), and Ms. Belinda Cleveland, all of Tuscaloosa, AL; uncles, Mr. Joe Edward Townsend, North Hartford, CT and Simon (Annie) Spindle, Birmingham AL. Deloris also leaves many special nieces, nephews, and cousins. She also leaves many, many dear friends and classmates too numerous to name.
