Clyde Percy Bennett, Sr., was born on April 13, 1939 to the late Estella and
Goldsby Bennett in Selma, Alabama. In 1945, he moved to Bessemer, Alabama
with his family. He accepted Christ as his personal Savior at a young age and was
baptized by Pastor F.D. King at First Baptist Ninth Street, Bessemer, Alabama. He
later joined New Bethlehem Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor
William H. Walker, Sr., Bessemer, Alabama.
He was educated in the Bessemer City School system where he attended Carver
Elementary and Dunbar High School. He later moved to Detroit, Michigan where
he graduated from Eastern High School. After graduation, he joined the US Army
where he served honorably from April 1963 until April 1969. He served in the
Vietnam War as a marksman (Rifle M14) and received the Good Conduct Medal.
After six years of faithful service, he was honorably discharged in 1969.
He was employed at RL Ziegler for seventeen years. During that time, he met and
married the love of his life, Lottie-Glover Bennett. After the closing of Ziegler, he
was employed and retired from Kopper’s Industries. After retiring, his strong work
ethic landed him a part time job with Barber’s Dairy.
Because of his love for the community, he volunteered to deliver meals to the
elderly with “Meals on Wheels” in the North Birmingham area. His love of
horticulture was the motivation for taking pride in maintaining a beautiful and
well-kept lawn.
