Carolyn Lynn Johnson Smith was born October 10, 1965 in Bessemer, Alabama to Elijah and Lillie Mae Johnson. She accepted Christ as her Savior while attending Ebenezer Baptist Church. She received her education through Bessemer City School System, graduating from J.S. Abrams High School in 1984. Carolyn later attended Allied Health and Training to become a certified Nursing Assistant.
Throughout her early life Cal, as she was affectionately called, worked as a nursing assistant. In later years she received her cosmetology assistant license and worked beside her niece until her health began to fail. Cal was continually active person in her community, and she loved both Jess Lanier and Abrams Class of 1984.
On April 18th, at 4:45 P.M. Cal gave her final testimony unto the Lord and relinquished her earthly body surrounded by family. She is preceded in death by her parents, Elijah and Lillie Mae Johnson; sister, Brenda Cox; brothers, Elijah Johnson and Ronnie Johnson.
Those left to cherish her memories are her husband of 32 years, Bennard Smith, Sr.; children, Bernadette, Veronica, Cortney, Shannard (Milton), Tierra and Bennard, Jr.; grandchildren, RaNard, Deonte, Calvin, Jr., Cortney, Jr. and Kailen; great grandchildren, Dakota, Serenity and Kace; brother, James (Sandra) Stephens, Jr.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
