Alene Thornton Nelson was born February 7, 1927 to the late J.P. and Maggie Thornton in Fairfield, Alabama. She was the third of four siblings. One brother and two sisters preceded her in death. On Wednesday, April 18, 2012, she departed this life at 10:45 A.M. in her "own" home, with a devoted and loving neighbor,Sandra Moody and nephew, Alfred McKinney by her side. On March 11, 1948 she married Grover Lee Nelson, Jr. (Kitty) and remained married until his death. To this union six children were born, two preceded her in death; Grover, Jr. and Gloria Nelson. Alene had various jobs throughout her life which included being a vocalist and pianist for many churches. The job she enjoyed most was being a wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and great-great grandmother. She instilled unity, knowledge, strength, and love,except when it came to "Kitty Kat" her favorite stuffed animal who she put before "everyone". Alene will always be remembered as the esteemed matriarch of the family. She leaves to cherish her many memories: four children, O.C. Jones (Lillie), Harriet Murphy, Linda Thornton, and Chanda Hollingsworth; twelve grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, and 8 great-great grandchildren; special friends, Kate Johnson, Evelyn Hieghts, and Richard and Linda Moore; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
